The Pup:

Jane, the youngest of the catwings from Ursula K. Le Guin's Catwings series.

Family:
Four older half-siblings, all tabbies and all winged: Thelma, Roger, James, and Harriet. They all live at Overhill Farm, cared for by the human children Susan and Hank.

Her mother, Mrs. Tabby, an unwinged tabby. She lives in an apartment in the City with Sarah Wolf, an old woman. Jane was living with Mother and Sarah, too -- until she discovered the Nexus.

Her father, Mr. Tom Jones, a black cat who left "on business" shortly after she was born. Also unwinged.

Friends:
Alexander, the unwinged cat who coaxed her out of her childhood muteness and whom she loves dearly (but not romantically). He lives at Overhill Farm with Jane's siblings.

History:
Jane hails from a present-day garden-variety Earth, whereon she is the fifth winged kitten born to a normal alleycat, Mrs. Tabby. Jane was separated from her mother when she was very young, flying up into the window of a locked abandoned warehouse where her wingless mother couldn't follow. Jane spent her first few months of life trapped in the warehouse, hungry and terrorized by the resident rats. She was eventually rescued by her winged half-siblings; but the trauma of the experience left her near-mute: Her only words were "Me!" and "HATE!" Later, a normal cat, Alexander, made friends with her and coaxed her into speaking. Later still, she left Overhill Farm (where she had been living with her siblings) to return to the city to visit her mother. While she was there, she was captured by a man who wanted to put her on television; though he didn't mistreat her, she resented captivity and eventually escaped. Currently, she lives with her mother and Sarah Wolf (an elderly woman) in an apartment, where the windows are always kept open. Having just recently found the Nexus, Jane is certain it promises many more adventures than the city ever could.

Powers:
Has wings and can fly. Can read and speak English, when she is in the Nexus, though no other languages; can speak with other animals, if they choose to speak with her.

Possessions:
A small silver key threaded on a silver chain. The key is covered with symbols, nameless arabesques, unsettling to look at. Jane found it in a Nexus junkpile. (Those with some mystical knowledge may recognize it as similar in appearance and "feel" to the Lovecraftian silver key of dreaming, as seen in "The Silver Key" and "Through the Gates of the Silver Key.")

A shiny round locket bearing a picture of Lord F'Abio, hero of innumerable wizarding romance novels (and distant relative to Gilderoy Lockhart) on the front. It being wizarding, F'Abio has a tendency to flex, wink, smile, and otherwise attempt to work his rugged yet androgynous charm. The locket contains a dose of a calming potion, which makes the drinker easygoing and (perhaps) more suggestible and gigglier than usual. Acquired at the 2007 PrIME Spring Social, where Jane was LOLed into Lady Tabitha, host of a grand ball.

Currently a student at prime_education. Jane commutes!
